Salvation Army CraigieburnRecently JMA Architects has undertaken a number of projects for The Salvation Army. In Craigieburn, a fast growing region to Melbourne’s north, we were engaged to manage the design and procurement of a modern Church to replace the existing centre in this area. Whilst the budget is limited, we have developed concepts to capture the raw industrial feeling that the Salvation Army have sought. The brief was to create an industrial shed which would accommodate the diverse requirements of drop in, emergency relief, leisure and, most importantly, worship. Steel portal frames and precast concrete have been animated with layers of patterns and motifs to create visual attraction and suggest activity and significance to the passing Hume Highway. The dual role of the project manager
and Architects allowed for smooth
negotiation and an excellent outcome
for the Salvation Army. Construction
began in March 2010 and was completed
in November 2010. The Australian
Commissioner of the Salvation Army
attended the opening service on
Christmas Eve, who conveyed the Army’s
satisfaction with the project.
